This piece started with a stock photo from a raid on illegal fur traders—an almost clinical image of a tiger fur in a blue plastic bag, casually held up for the camera. The flash had overexposed the photo, bleaching out much of the detail, but I found something alluring in that. There’s a melancholy to animal pelts, and I wanted to find a balance between the stark, forensic crudeness of the image and the aura the tiger once held.

  • Timothy Hon Hung Lee is a British-born Chinese artist whose work explores themes of self-identity, heritage, and the intersection of Eastern and Western perspectives. His paintings, often created on Chinese rice paper or canvas, utilise techniques like layering and abstraction to evoke ambiguity and temporal displacement. By weaving symbols and objects rich in cultural and spiritual significance into his compositions, Lee prompts us to reflect on the relevance of historical traditions and cultural semiotics in contemporary society.

  • Timothy (b.1983) holds a post-graduate MFA from Goldsmiths and is an alumni of the Florence Trust residency. His recent group shows include Split Gallery (London), Hewhood Gallery (London) and Christie’s (UK). Fairs include Asian Art in Paris and Art Central Hong Kong
