Aaron Ford’s painting weaves together layered histories of iconographic migration, drawing from Aby Warburg’s notion of cultural exchange as a vast network of recurring symbols. A weathered funerary statue of a man presented as Hercules overlooks a tomb, holding flowers that a now-eroded dog once sniffed. Overlaid like a double exposure, the painting also shows ethereal glass panes from the garden of a Tyrian Purple artisan who assisted in Ford’s research. This connects the scene to the painted sheets of glass in the exhibition, now marked with the image of Hercules' dog. This recursive mirroring reinforces Ford’s practice as an “observation tower” (as described by Warburg), tracing the persistence of symbols across time. From ancient funerary art to contemporary painting, his work maps how images migrate; shifting in meaning, but never losing their charge.
