Aaron Ford is an artist and researcher who examines how migration affects our understanding of art. Recently, he has used the production, movement, and heritage of the ancient pigment Tyrian Purple across the Mediterranean as a metaphor to explore the power structures in the region throughout history.

By investigating the extractive processes required to synthesise the pigment and its subsequent role as the symbol of Imperial Rome, Ford addresses Europe’s colonial legacy in North Africa, while also recognising the potential of art as a means of agency for the past, present, and future.

In his practice, Ford generates collaborative, discursive research, which he then synthesises in the studio into visual material presented in mediums such as glass, paint, and text. He employs a view of iconographic migration, as outlined by German art historian Aby Warburg, searching for recurring signs or symbols, with the painted image serving as a reference point. His interdisciplinary practice functions as an "observation tower," as Warburg describes it, that looks out over all the migratory routes of cultural exchange.
