Weaving together fragments from multiple adaptations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland - including Disney’s 1951 animation, a 1923 live-action hybrid, and various illustrated books - this work investigates the recursive logic of reference and reproduction. The Cheshire Cat appears on newsprint, grinning amid a digitally fragmented landscape that includes a tree with unnatural contours and a brown mud path generated using Photoshop’s AI prompt tool before being photographed on the screen and reinserted. At the base, a rebus of vowels unfolds: the‘A’ from an illustrated edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (connecting to a rabbit hole), the eagle from Marcel Broodthaers’ 1971 Studio International cover for ‘E’, the ‘I’ from the Bic logo(the brand of pencil used above), a nyctographic cipher for ‘O’, and a pointing hand for ‘U’. The bottom row becomes a phonetic map, extending Petts’ interest in language systems and typographic codes. Floating above, a cursive alphabet - missing its ‘A’ - recurs from a vintage drawing manual. Cloud icons drawn from a forgotten weather app gesture toward cloud computing and the hazy terrain between memory, media, and metadata.

  • Max Petts lives and works in London. They graduated from the Goldsmiths MFA in 2023 and from Chelsea College of Art in 2012.

Their practice deals with the complexity of looking and making while seeking to examine their place in the world and the specific set of privileges and penalties they have inherited. Working across disciplines (drawing, painting, writing, finding) they focus on the interplay of images and objects and the relationships that allow meaning to develop. Relationships between bodies and materials, facts and fictions. They consider their practice as an awareness building exercise; a way to posit contradictions.
